How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Holiday season is one of the happiest times of the year, bringing together friends and family to celebrate over hearty home-cooked meals and tasty drinks. It is common belief that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, people gain around 5 to 7 pounds. But, even if you only gain 1 pound, it is unlikely that you will shed the full amount of weight gained during the season. Here are a few tricks to avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain.

  1. Don’t Diet

It is nearly impossible to diet during holiday season. You really think you’re going to miss out on stuffing and mashed potatoes or your mother’s famous sugar cookies? Dieting can create a sense of desire you wouldn’t otherwise have if you just allowed yourself to eat whatever you want. Instead of dieting, focus on portion control. Allow yourself a cookie every now and then, but don’t over-indulge. Try eating a healthy snack before a holiday event so that you aren’t starving upon your arrival. If a friend or relative stops by with holiday treats, make sure you put them straight into the pantry. If you can’t see the goodies around you, you won’t be tempted to snack on them.

  1. Maintain Your Exercise Routine

You worked out all through the summer and into the fall, why stop now? Keep up your regular exercise routines to avoid gaining excess weight during the holidays. Not only will this ensure you are burning calories and fat, but it will also motivate you eat healthy. If you have already put in time and effort to your fitness routine, you will be less inclined to want to sabotage your hard work.

  1. Get an Adequate Amount of Sleep

With numerous holiday parties crowding your calendar, your sleep schedule may fall right down the drain. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are less likely to exercise and to avoid your cravings, causing those holiday pounds to build up. Try your best to maintain a healthy sleep schedule by limiting the amount of alcohol you drink at holiday events or by leaving a party a little earlier than normal. Can’t miss out on the last hour? Give yourself a morning to snooze your alarm for a few extra minutes of sleep.
