From Our Founder: Cardio Kickbox by Grit by Brit

Confession: my obsession with fitness began with Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo.

Having grown up in Houston, summers were too hot to run or train outside, so I started using fitness videos from the age of 12. Tae Bo was my favorite—the perfect mix of cardio and strength-based choreography. So when I founded Booya and started mapping out my content plan, I knew I had to have cardio kickbox in the mix.

Brittani Rettig, founder of Grit by Brit, and I connected immediately—she is also from Texas and similarly inspired by Billy Blanks. Brit attended Harvard Business School a few years before me and was now also pursuing her passion for fitness with her concept Grit by Brit.  Like me, Brit believes in getting a little everything in one workout—punches, kicks, choreography, and plyometric exercises.

Cardio Kickbox burns an insane amount of calories in a short workout thanks to kickboxing ‘rounds’, where each round targets a different part of the body. Brit keeps you moving through rounds with little bouts of plyometric ‘power’ moves, and finally wraps up the workout with a great toning circuit to target your legs, arms and butt.

This workout is one of my favorites on the platform and we’ve yet to meet a single blogger who didn’t love it too. It does move quickly though, so if you consider yourself uncoordinated, the transitions may be frustration. That is, however, why cardio junkies love the constant movement.

Brit is now opening up her own studio in Dallas, Texas and has a growing following on her blog—check her out at gritbybrit.com and tweet / facebook us with your feedback on the workout!

5 Tips to Shake Up Your Workout Routine

We hope that you’ve found at least one workout that you love on Booya (do let us know), but one of our core philosophies is the belief in variety and having fun while working out. According to Booya trainer Brittani Rettig, you should vary your workouts to prevent injury, avoid a plateau and stay motivated.

Bri’s Top 5 Tips to Shake Up Your Workout Routine:

1. Vary your cardio: Do three different types of cardio exercises every week. At a minimum, it’s most important to ensure that you get three, 30-minute cardio workouts in each week. However, you can maximize results by doing a variety of cardio workouts.

2. Add intervals: Intervals in terms of speed and incline/resistance are a great way to keep your body in the “cardio zone” and make sure you don’t get complacent.  For example: when on the elliptical, ride at level 5 resistance for 3 min then level 10 resistance for 1 min, continue alternating for 30 min to 1 hr.

3. Skip running: Power walk instead of running or jogging. Power walking is not as natural of a movement as jogging or running which means you have to engage more muscles.  This is a great way to shock your body and even burn more calories. Try adding light hand weights for an extra burn!

4. Switch up your resistance regimen: Instead of your usual back and chest workouts that you have been doing for years, change it up!  Try TRX suspension training or an endurance body weight routine.  Remember, if you do what you always done, you’ll get what you always got!

5. Get moving with a group: Working out with a group makes you push harder and leverage the energy of those around you.

Brit gives an insider peek at her latest BooyaFitness.com workout taping:

That’s me, front and center, delivering the GRIT by Brit workout for Booya Fitness.

Booya is a revolutionary new fitness company that provides high-end workout videos to consumers on demand.  Think NetFlix for workout videos. It features amazing fitness instructors mostly from the best boutique fitness studios in NYC.

Personally, I decided to support Booya and be a featured instructor on the platform because I love the idea of being able to connect with my students outside of the group fitness classroom.  Also, the founder, Prita Kumar, is a fellow Harvard Business School MBA and Fitness Fanatic (like me).  Prita and I met each other over Twitter and instantly connected.  I’m so excited for her to transform the fitness industry through high-end video content.  You can learn more about her journey to starting in this cool start up documentary.

So, let me move on and tell you a little about the cool experience I had at the  shoot and what you can expect from the new and improved GRIT by Brit workout.

Here I am headed to the studio with my cue cards in hand!

If you have a copy of my DVD (if you don’t you can buy one on Amazon), you’ll notice that the workout I designed for Booya is very similar.  However, I really tried to take my game to the next level.  In addition to the jammin’ music, I incorporated new techniques I’ve learned to over the past year to enhance my workout.  Specifically:

1. More fun: I incorporated some “dance-like” moves into the cardio sections and into the choreography overall.

2. More fierce: After each cardio round I have a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) section.

3. More fitness: Throughout the workout I really focused on focus on toning the legs and core.  Also I only use of body weight resistance training – no hand weights this time

I feel a huge sense of accomplishment after this shoot because I can look back on my progress over the past year and see how I’ve really grown as a fitness instructor and personal coach.  It feels good knowing that I’m better able to help people reach their fitness goals.  I’m very confident that my new workout video will inspire and motivate tons of people to have fun, get fit and show their GRIT.
